Understanding Fear & How to Overcome It
What Is Fear?
Fear is a distressing emotion triggered by the perception of danger — whether the threat is real or imagined. The Greek word φόβος (phóbos) means fear, terror, or dread, and it describes a negative sensation that arises when we feel threatened, overwhelmed, or uncertain.
Fear affects the mind, emotions, and spirit. It can influence how we think, how we act, and how we respond to God.
Types of Fear
Fear comes in many forms: fear of people, sickness, accidents, chemicals, animals, public speaking, failure — even fear itself. For Christians, fear generally falls into two categories:
- Godly fear — a reverential awe of God that leads to obedience, worship, and wisdom.
- Evil fear — a destructive fear that brings bondage, anxiety, and spiritual paralysis.

Reasons Why People Fear
1. Fear Comes When We Look at the Storm Instead of Jesus
Matthew 14:23–31 gives us a powerful example. Peter walked on water toward Jesus — until he shifted his focus from Christ to the wind.
He saw the storm before he stepped out of the boat, yet he only became afraid when he stopped looking at Jesus.
Many believers today experience the same struggle. We fix our attention on:
- physical challenges
- financial pressures
- academic struggles
- spiritual battles
- social or marital issues
Instead of “looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith” (Hebrews 12:2).
Scripture reminds us:
- “We walk by faith, not by sight.” — 2 Corinthians 5:7
- “To be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.” — Romans 8:6
Fear grows when our eyes drift from Christ to our circumstances.
2. Fear Comes When We Don’t Fully Trust God
Many say they believe God — but do they trust Him?
Some fear that:
- “What if God doesn’t show up?”
- “What if He doesn’t fulfill His promises?”
- “What if I’m disappointed?”
But Scripture is clear:
“God is not a man, that He should lie…” — Numbers 23:19
Fear thrives where trust is weak.
Overcoming Fear With Faith
1. God Did Not Give Us the Spirit of Fear
2 Timothy 1:7 declares:
“For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.”
Fear is not just an emotion — it can be a spiritual force. If God didn’t give it to us, we don’t have to accept it.
1 Corinthians 2:12 teaches that we have received the Spirit of God so we can know what He has freely given us. Anything God did not give — including fear — must be rejected.
3. Faith Is the Cure for Fear
Hebrews 11:1,6 teaches:
- Faith is the substance of things hoped for
- Faith is the evidence of things not seen
- Without faith, it is impossible to please God
Faith comes by hearing, believing, and acting on God’s Word. When you stand on God’s truth, fear loses its power.
Even in the “valley of the shadow of death,” you can fear no evil — because God is with you.
If Peter had kept his eyes on Jesus, he would not have sunk. The same is true for us.
You Can Overcome Fear Today
Philippians 2:10–11 reminds us that every knee bows at the name of Jesus — including the spirit of fear.
You can:
- bind the spirit of fear
- cast it out in Jesus’ name
- walk in freedom
- live by faith
- fulfill your God-given purpose
I pray that God gives you understanding, strengthens your faith, and empowers you to overcome every fear in Jesus’ name.
